Attention everyone! I have an announcement to make! Election Day is next week. Why no one’s talking about it, I have no idea.

Whether you’re wrapped up in the pomp and circumstance of the election or feel like you want to hibernate for the next four years, I think we can all agree on one thing: dessert. And this dessert, my friends, will bring anyone together: Election Day Brownies, also known as Patriotic Red Velvet Oreo Nutella Blonde Brownies. Say that four times fast.

Are you having a watch party on Tuesday? Make these and make friends!

No matter which camp you’re in, I think most of us can agree that this election cycle has been a bit um, unconventional? Perhaps a little crazy and a tad nutty? So, I’m following suit. I got a little crazy and a tad nutty with these brownies, and I am thrilled to share them with you.

They’re not the least bit moderate.

Let’s have a real political party and prepare us some delicious patriotic brownies! Begin by preheating the oven to 350 and making the brownie batter (recipe at the bottom of the post).

Scoop out half of the brownie batter into a lightly greased square baking dish. Using your fingers or a spatula, spread out the batter so it evenly covers the bottom of the dish.

Next, remove the tops of the Red Velvet Oreos, set them aside, and then set the cream side of the Oreo face down into a plate of sprinkles.

Replace the tops of the Oreos and line the dish with four rows of four cookies.

Scoop out the remaining brownie batter from the mixing bowl and place on top of the Oreos.

Again, using your fingers or a spatula, press the dough down until it evenly coats all of the Oreos.

Place about five dollops of Nutella (or chocolate hazelnut spread – I typically use the off-brand of Nutella because it’s cheaper, but HEB was out of it when I was doing my grocery shopping for this recipe) on top of the brownie batter.

Spread it evenly with a butter knife.

And then use the butter knife to swirl the Nutella into the batter.

Place in the oven to bake for 20-22 minutes. As I indicate in the recipe below, if you’re serving these soon after you bake them (within the same day), you can go ahead and bake them for 22 minutes. If you’re serving them the following day, bake them for 20 – they’ll firm up after they sit for a bit. I have a phobia of over-baked brownies, so if you’re also a fan of ooey, gooey brownies, just stick with 20 minutes in the oven no matter what. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!

Remove them from the oven and allow them to cool for a bit before serving them. Look how yummy!

Once again, Elizabeth and Aaron were outside with me as I was taking my pictures for this post. Elizabeth was, for obvious reasons, quite interested in my photography subject this go round. We kept telling her, “You can’t touch, you can just watch.” So she did just that. She watched, and watched, and watched.

And then we gave her a little bit and she was the happiest little girl on the face of the planet.

And then Aaron and I ate a lot bit after she went to bed and we were the happiest kids on the face of the planet.

Cut into those brownies and notice the patriotism shine through!

No matter what you’re doing to commemorate Election Day, I hope you take a moment to be thankful for living in this country. I think it probably goes without saying, but I love America, and I hope I can share a little bit of that love with you, not just in this post, but throughout my whole blog.

For those of you who read through my recipes regularly, you know it’s rare that I can end a recipe without adding some words of encouragement. As we approach Election Day and the results, whatever they may be, can I remind you of something?

You can make a difference.

You. Yes, you, can make a difference. Election Day is huge, and our country will be greatly affected by the results, again, regardless of what they are. But guess what? Our country can also be greatly affected by you – someone willing to do some small things to make a big difference. And if you’re looking for one way to do that, can I remind you of some words from Ronald Reagan?

All Great Change in America Begins at the Dinner Table; Election Day Brownies (Patriotic Red Velvet Oreo Nutella Blonde Brownies)

No matter what happens on Election Day, your dinner table is a location of change. Use it, and make it count. You, my friend, can make a difference just by making a habit of sharing regular meals with your family. And after that meal, have some brownies!

Do you have any fun plans to watch the results come in on Tuesday?!

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes
Servings: 12 brownies
Author: The American Patriette

Ingredients

  • 1 stick butter softened
  • 1.5 c brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 1 large egg
  • 1.5 c flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 c semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 c red & blue M&Ms*
  • 16 Red Velvet Oreos
  • Patriotic sprinkles
  • 5 tbsp Nutella or chocolate hazelnut spread

Instructions

  • Using a stand or a hand mixer, cream together butter, sugar, and vanilla.
  • Add egg and mix.
  • Add flour, ½ c at a time and mix.
  • Mix in baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Once batter is thoroughly mixed, fold in chocolate chips and then add the M&Ms and mix gently (you don’t want the M&Ms to crack too much as you stir them in).
  • Scoop half of the batter into a lightly greased square baking dish and press with your fingers or a spatula to evenly distribute the batter on the bottom of the dish.
  • Pour patriotic sprinkles onto a small plate.
  • Remove the tops of the Oreos and place the cream side of the Oreo into the sprinkles, replace the Oreo top, and begin lining the batter-lined baking dish with Oreos. Repeat until you’ve lined up 4 rows of 4 Oreos each.
  • Add the remaining brownie batter on top of the Oreos and spread evenly, again with your fingers or with a spatula, to cover the top.
  • Place dollops of Nutella on top of the brownie batter, lightly spread with a butter knife, and use the tip of the butter knife to swirl into the top of the brownie.
  • Place in oven and bake for 20-22 minutes.**
  • Remove from oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

*You can use any kind of M&Ms you'd like. I used the regular M&Ms for this recipe, but you can easily use mini M&Ms. [br]**If you're planning to serve these the same day you bake them, bake them for 22 minutes. If you're planning to serve them the following day, bake them for 20 minutes. If you bake them for 20 and then serve them immediately, they're going to be very gooey (perhaps that's not a bad thing?!), but they'll firm up by the following day. You don't want to over bake these brownies, so if you want to play it safe, bake them for 20 and know you're going to get some nice, gooey brownies out of the oven!

    1. They are SO yummy, Jessica! I’ll make them for a cousins’ day or Goertz gathering sometime! I can make them Christmasy just by swapping the type of sprinkles & M&Ms I use, so maybe I’ll do that this year! 🙂

    1. I’m so sad I just now saw this comment! I guess I kept missing it when I’ve logged into my blog this week! How did the watch party go?! How many students did you have?! That’s so fun – I hope we can do that with Aaron’s students sometime! What a great idea for a social studies teacher!!
