The Best Easy & Flavorful Guacamole Recipe2

Here’s what you’ll love about this homemade guacamole recipe:

  • It’s made with a secret ingredient (well, secret-ish): SALSA. I’ve found that just a little bit of salsa in a batch of guacamole can make a world of difference.
  • The rest of the recipe calls for simple ingredients. Quick PSA reminder – guacamole is actually good for you! Alleluia! Guacamole all day! With fresh avocados & a few other fresh ingredients + seasonings, you have yourself a healthy dish!
  • It’ll turn out absolutely delicious the first time you make it and every time you make it. I’ve made this recipe a ZILLION times, and every single time it’s a huge hit!
  • It’s super quick to whip up. Total time on this…maybe 5-10 minutes and it’s ready to go!

The best part? Everyone will go CRAZY over this recipe! It is just. that. good.

How to Make this Easy & Flavorful Guacamole Recipe

Step 1: Gather all of your ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Ripe avocados (medium to large size)
  • Finely diced red onion (you can get away with white onion if needed)
  • Chopped fresh cilantro
  • Fresh lime juice
  • Salsa
  • Seasonings: salt, garlic powder, and onion powder

FYI: see my tip at the end of the post for making guacamole in a pinch if you want to make some last-minute guac and don’t have all of these ingredients on hand!

Notes for some of the ingredients:

  • You’ll want to use avocados that are on the riper side. Soft but not too soft, you know? I love it when I have perfect avocados, but that’s not always realistic. You can absolutely use avocados with brown spots – just cut around them. No big deal! If I am dealing with really mushy avocados, I just try to use as much of them as I can. The guacamole recipe might then be a bit reduced (and so then I’ll adjust the other ingredients accordingly, but just by taste…I don’t bother with measuring them), but you can definitely use up as much of the avocado as possible.
  • The avocados might also be a little easier to work with if they’re at room temperature, but this doesn’t usually matter to me. Either way works fine!
  • I almost always use fresh lime juice, but I’ve made it before with lime juice from the fridge and it still tastes plenty good!
  • You can use store-bought salsa, but I always use my homemade salsa to add to the guac. I just can’t resist the freshness and zestiness that it brings to the dip! And, when I’m making guacamole for anything, I’m almost always making salsa to go with it, so it’s easy enough for me to just spoon out some salsa and add it to the guacamole.

Step 2: Mix (or mash) avocados with lime juice and cilantro

You can mash the avocados by hand with a fork or with a potato masher, but I think the best way is the simplest way: by using a hand mixer. This makes it soooo much easier!

When I do this, I only mix just enough to get the avocados to a slight pulp, especially since I’m going to turn on the mixer again to add in the remaining ingredients and I like to keep my guacamole somewhat chunky with a lot of texture.

Note: You could use a stand mixer, but if you do, unless you want ultra creamy guac with no chunks, just make sure you don’t mix it for too long. The hand mixer gives you more control so that you don’t over mix, so just make sure you’re doing quick pulses with your stand mixer if you don’t want it too creamy.

There’s really not a wrong way to mash the avocados with the other ingredients, you just want to be mindful of how much you cream them if you’re going for chunky + textured.

Step 3: Add in red onion, salsa, and seasonings

Mix just long enough to get everything blended together, or if you like your guacamole especially chunky, you could just stir in the remaining ingredients rather than mix them in. Just personal preference!

Step 4: Enjoy!

Serve it up with a large bowl or platter of tortilla chips & enjoy with family & friends!

Extra Tips for this easy homemade guacamole recipe:

  • For spicy guacamole, you can add in a few different things: red chili flakes, finely diced fresh jalapenos, and/or use a hotter salsa in the recipe.
  • For even chunkier guacamole, or to just use up some leftover tomatoes, you can mix in diced up vine-ripened or roma tomatoes.
  • Homemade guacamole will last for a couple of days in the fridge. For better results, especially if you have quite a bit left over, add the guacamole to a glass bowl and cover the top of the guac with a layer of plastic wrap (with the piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface of the guacamole to prevent more air exposure), then top with a lid to make it an airtight container. Enjoy with chips or sliced bell peppers, serve with tacos, or add to a taco salad.
  • For making a simple guacamole recipe in a pinch: There have been times that I’ve had a few leftover avocados in my fridge that I need to use before they go bad, so I’ve whipped up last-minute, really basic guacamole. While this version of guac is my absolute favorite, if I need to “make do,” I can still make really flavorful guacamole without cilantro, onion, and salsa. Whip up the avocados with your hand mixer or by hand with a fork, add in some lime juice (fresh or from the fridge), cilantro if you have it, and salt, garlic powder, and onion powder to taste. It’s a super simple recipe, and you’ll still have yourself a yummy batch of guacamole worth eating!

Enjoy! This is such a great recipe for an easy appetizer or topping to go with enchiladas, tacos, taco salad, or Tex-Mex casseroles…any time of year! Serve it up with this homemade salsa recipe and you’ll be in business!

Ingredients

  • 5-6 medium-large avocados
  • Juice from 1.5 limes*
  • About ⅓ bunch of cilantro about ¼ c chopped
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped red onion
  • ½ c salsa**
  • 1 tsp garlic salt to taste (1-2 tsp)
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1-2 tsp salt to taste

Instructions

  • Peel and de-seed the avocados. Add avocados to large mixing bowl, squeeze in lime juice, and add cilantro.
  • Using a hand or stand mixer, blend the avocados and lime juice until consistency becomes creamy - about 15-20 seconds. (If you want chunkier guacamole, don't mix for too long.)
  • Stir in remaining ingredients - onion, salsa, and seasonings, and stir until everything is well-blended.
  • Enjoy by itself with tortilla chips, or use it as a delicious topping for tacos, burgers, or sandwiches!

Notes

* If you want it even tangier, you can add more lime juice, but this is my favorite ratio of lime to guac.
** You can use any kind of salsa, but I'm partial and always use my homemade salsa for this!
TIPS:
  1. For spicier guacamole, add in red chili flakes, finely diced fresh jalapenos, and/or use a hotter salsa in the recipe.
  2. For even chunkier guacamole, or to just use up some leftover tomatoes, you can mix in diced up vine-ripened or roma tomatoes.
  3. Homemade guacamole will last for a couple of days in the fridge. For better results, especially if you have quite a bit left over, add the guacamole to a glass bowl and cover the top of the guac with a layer of plastic wrap (with the piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface of the guacamole to prevent more air exposure), then top with a lid to make it an airtight container.
